New Mexico Council Education Scholarships

The Navy League of the United States New Mexico Council (NM Council), in partial fulfillment of its mission, has created a scholarship program for members of all the U.S. Sea Services; the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and U.S. flag Merchant Marine Active or Reserve Members and their eligible dependents. The NM Council will present two scholarships annually: one in August and one in December. These scholarships must be utilized for in-resident expenses at an accredited college or university or for an on-line educational course or courses.

Eligibility

U. S. Sea Services; active duty, Reserve and dependents. An active duty individual does not have to reside in New Mexico but the individual accepting the scholarship will have to utilize this scholarship in a New Mexico university or a certified secondary educational program.

Requirements

The applicant must:

be a member, spouse or dependent of the U.S. Sea Services.
be enrolled in an accredited college or university, taking classes in-residence or on-line, as a full-time or part-time student, and be able to provide verification of enrollment.
provide a copy of an official or unofficial transcript verifying their minimum 2.5 GPA from an educational institution (college or vocational transcript).
submit an essay entitled "How this scholarship will help me achieve one or more of my goals" no later than 1 August or 1 December as applicable. The essay should be between 300 and 1,000 words in length.
submit one signed letter of recommendation from a teacher, volunteer organization, or employer.

Service members or a former service member must be able to establish their assignment and service to the NM Council by official records. To be eligible, dependents must be able to show proof of a parent or spouse who served in the U.S. Sea Services. Relationships beyond parents or spouse are not considered for awards.

Two separate scholarships will be awarded based on the quality and merit of applications. The scholarship is a one-time award.

Deadline for Applications: August 31 and December 1. The amount of each award will be determined by the Council, annually; scholarships of $750.00 have previously been awarded.

With the essay, submit a completed New Mexico Council scholarship application indicating eligibility, location of enrollment, course or courses of study, contact information (email address, mailing address, and telephone number). Related Information

The recipient or recipients will be asked to attend a luncheon or dinner at the Navy League New Mexico Council's expense to receive the scholarship. The New Mexico Council requests that scholarship recipients pose for a photograph or photographs of their award of the scholarship. The NM Council reserves the right to use any photograph/video taken at any event sponsored by NM Council, without the expressed written permission of those included within the photograph/video. The NM Council may use the photograph/video in publications or other media material produced, used or contracted by NM Council including but not limited to: brochures, invitations, books, newspapers, magazines, television, websites, etc.
